Ghanaian Dr Nancy Abu-Bonsrah Makes History as First Black Woman to Graduate from Neurosurgery Progr

Ghanaian neurosurgeon Dr Nancy Abu-Bonsrah has made history after becoming the first black woman to graduate from the neurosurgery program at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr Abu-Bonsrah completed the program in June after a hectic 7-year residency.

She had earlier made history as the first black woman to be accepted into the program in 2017.

The Ghanaian also spent five years in the medical program at Johns Hopkins prior to her neurosurgery residency.

In addition to her Doctor of Medicine, awarded in 2017, she also earned a Master of Public Health in 2022, which was supported by the Global Health Scholarship and MPH Scholarship Awards.

Dr Abu-Bonsrah currently works at the UPMC Williamsport Hospital in Pennsylvania. She is married to a Ghanaian doctor, Kwabena Yamoah, who is a specialist in interventional radiology.
